Should I remodel, or should I start fresh?

So, you’ve been watching a lot of HGTV…and while all those DIY shows seem fantastic and exciting…do they make you feel a bit “inadequate” when it comes to the amount of expertise, skill, time and money it must take to tackle all those home improvement projects?

Dreaming of gleaming bright white cabinets, fresh clean countertops, and gorgeous new lighting?  Well, I think we have all been there.  Pinterest, Houzz, HGTV, whatever sources of home décor/design inspiration you might be indulging in this week…all have a tendency to make one want what we currently don’t have.  And while the “10 steps to painting your kitchen cabinets” tutorial looks simple enough…it still can be a bit daunting if you’ve never even tackled the most simple arts and crafts project on your own!

Let’s be honest – it’s scary!  Who wants to be featured on a “Pinterest Fails” site, right??

So maybe you have a good reason for your desire to upgrade.  Maybe the time has come for your avocado green refrigerator and shag carpeting to say bye-bye!  Or, maybe your family has grown or your situation has changed and your floor plan simply doesn’t work for you anymore!  At any rate…these are all reasons why “making a change” could be a step in the right direction.

But where do you start?  If you’re thinking that a DIY home remodel project isn’t really for you…but you know you want to update your abode…you should consider building or buying a NEW home!  If you build, you can let all your decorating dreams be fulfilled…because you can pick and choose all those beautiful finishes you’ve been dreaming about!  Or, if the idea of designing it yourself is scary – you can buy a new home that’s already built or in the process already…and you can live in a masterpiece where a designer has already made all the “on trend” selections of flooring, lighting, countertops, and cabinets FOR YOU!

First things first…you need to sell your existing home.  Take a look around…is it ready to sell?  Consult with a good Realtor and they will undoubtedly point you the right direction as to WHAT (if anything) needs to change before you put your home on the market.  Often, your Realtor can even help you with getting bids for the things that might need to be updated (as a must) before you can market your home properly.  They can look at your home with a discerning eye (without the emotion that you might have attached to your home) and really see it how the rest of the buying market would.  Your Realtor should be able to give you recommendations on what needs to change, and may even suggest you remove a lot of “personal” items so that your home isn’t too “you” …so that the new prospective buyers can picture THEMSELVES in that space!

This blog lists only a few of the “first steps” in your new home journey…so best of luck and be sure to check back here for more tips on getting your home ready to sell!
